Well, I wouldn't consider XMP as a real overclock but just as a maximum clock frequency manufacturer considers as full speed for that particular RAM stick model. That is not a traditional overclock that meant going over manufacturer's recommended frequencies. Some RAM has several such XMP profiles that are just set of instructions for BIOS to set memory to certain frequency including other settings like Cas and voltage for instance for it to work at all or at it's best performance.

JEDEC is also similar but may include even more detailed settings. Conversely, if CPU can run from a set minimum frequency to it's maximum frequency on all cores is also just a set of steps in frequency and not real overclock but just normal operation within given projected parameters set by manufacturer to their least successful sample.

And how can this be changed so we can take advantage of things like XMP? It's the Ihk. This isn't just specific to my computer, it's been on various computers to different degrees. More options were available with the hk in BIOS but were still severely limited and needed software through windows.

So there's no solution? I can't even get past current limit throttling and power limit throttling above 4. It's ridiculous.

Howeverdepsite my manual showing this option, it does not show up in my bios anywhere and certainly not under DRAM performance control where it should be. I read on another forum that the performance enhance had to be set at Extreme so how up the XMP option, but no mattter what setting i use there is NO Extreme memory profile XMP option showing up at all!

When you power on your computer, it conducts a power-on self-test. Part of this process includes automatically configuring installed hardware, including your memory. Your computer needs to know the model of your RAM as well as which timings and frequency to set. XMP is an extension of SPD which provides higher frequencies and tighter timings for your memory to run at.

It also corrects for the extra voltage required which provides a stable overclock with the click of a button. Supported memory modules contain two different XPM profiles which provide different levels of overclocking. Simply select one of the two profiles, save your settings and reboot. You can confirm your new overclock using a program such as CPU-Z. If you don't enable XMP, they will run at your system's standard specifications that are dependent on the CPU you have.

That is to say, you won't take advantage of the higher clock speeds that your RAM may have. In most circumstances, this will be fine. Your system will simply run to spec, and you can rest easy knowing everything is nice and stable.

XMP supported modules contain two memory profiles labeled "Profile 1" and "Profile 2". The first profile contains enthusiast settings; these allow your memory to run at the rated speed advertised on the box. These settings enable only a modest overclock and are also the most stable.

The second profile contains more extreme settings that offer a much higher level of performance. Having two profiles allows you to quickly change performance levels for benchmarking or resource heavy tasks. Any time overclocking is involved, there is a risk of instability.
